ASA Hoops Turns a Snow Day into a Skills Day

When snow wipes out school and cancels plans, most kids sleep in and grab a screen. ASA Hoops players grabbed a ball instead. On short notice, we opened the gym doors at two locations—Bishop MacKenzie Center and Dearborn Academy—for a surprise snow day clinic that turned a winter storm into a full day of hoops, hard work, and fun.

Two Gyms, One Goal: Get Better

Our staff moved quickly to secure both Bishop MacKenzie Center and Dearborn Academy. Players checked in, shook off the snow, and were on the court within minutes. Each gym ran its own full clinic schedule, but the purpose at both was the same: get quality reps, compete, and keep kids active on a day they’d normally lose to the weather.

Coaches grouped players by age and skill level so everyone was challenged at the right pace. Younger groups focused on building strong fundamentals, while older groups got a little more intensity and game-like scenarios.

Culture: Effort, Attitude, and Fun

Beyond drills and games, the snow day clinic was a snapshot of ASA culture. Coaches talked about:

  • Bringing consistent effort, even on a day you could have stayed home

  • Being coachable—listening, adjusting, and trying new things

  • Supporting teammates and showing good sportsmanship

We built in breaks, music, and time to connect so kids left tired but smiling. For many, it felt like a bonus camp day dropped right into the middle of winter.

Looking Ahead: More Opportunities

This snow day success shows what happens when we get kids in the gym. Mark your calendars for:

Thank You, Families and Players

Pulling off a clinic at two locations on short notice only works when families trust the program and kids are excited to be in the gym. We’re grateful to everyone who rearranged their snow day plans to join us at Bishop MacKenzie Center and Dearborn Academy.

Snow days may cancel school, but at ASA Hoops, they don’t cancel development. They just give us one more chance to get in the gym, get better together, and have a lot of fun doing it —just like our Newton clinicscampsschool vacation clinicsFebruary vacation upcoming clinics, and summer camps upcoming.
